there is quite a bit of debate at the moment

over a small scale research thingy that found that you are more likely to be racist if you are flying those Australian flags on your car… I just want to say first up that I love australia, and please don’t throw things at me… but I think all Australian themed things on peoples care are signs that you are ever so slightly racist…

for example

those “fuck of we’re full” stickers - kind of self explanatory but might I remind you unless you are of aboriginal decent, you are also an immigrant.

also those “if you don’t love it, leave” stickers - I love Australia, but that doesn’t mean I think we are perfect, and there is a lot of things I would like to see changed and improved… so should I also have to leave?

I don’t mind an odd southern cross sticker, or even a tattoo, and perhaps racism is the wrong word for it… maybe most people are just ignorant. I know I am fairly knowledgeable about culture and society because of my anthropology degree, but people are people, and we pride ourselves on being multicultural, yet many people despise those they see as strange or foreign.

we all look the same on the inside, and maybe our world view is a little different, but why would you want to be all the same? that’s how we learn and change and develop as people and as a culture. if everyone was the same it would be a dull place indeed.

So just read a book, people. Not a newspaper, that is sensationalist bullshit at the best of times. read wiki at the least. learn something about someone else’s culture you don’t understand. And if you cannot even consider that any part of their belief system is relevant to our culture, then shame on you Australia, shame, shame, shame.
